Recently, my husband and I had a ‘money date‘—dedicated time to review our finances, expenses, and budget. We realized our savings were low and cash flow was tight. Despite cutting back on travel and entertainment earlier this year to invest more in our health, we overspent on groceries and eating out, doubling our food budget.

Then the medical bill came, the tax man came, and our savings got wiped out.

As we approach our third wedding anniversary, we’re still adjusting to married life and the significant life changes we have made during that time. However, our regular ‘money dates’ and financial systems have proven to be our guiding light.

We’ve tightened our spending, adhered to a strict grocery budget, and limited dining out to our date nights. These adjustments are helping us rebuild our savings and regain financial stability.

I am now closely tracking our spending as I got confident in our system and lost sight of it.

We also recognize the need to set boundaries with my daughter to avoid overspending when she’s with us. She seems to think she is on vacation, and we tend to create that fantasy. The reality is that it is not serving either one of us.

As someone who helps others manage their money, I know this situation is common. We set goals, develop a game plan, and follow through on the plan, but then, slowly, life creeps up on us, and the goal becomes less of our focus.

It happens to everyone.

The key is having the right structures to navigate life’s uncertainty with clarity, ease, and wisdom.
